Washington DC Among Forbes Top Ten Cities for Job Growth
2 million visitors, 5000 porta-potties, and 28000 hotel rooms later, the inauguration of Barack Obama is finished. The crowd that came to Washington DC this weekend exceeded the numbers of the 1964 Civil Rights March on Washington, The Million Man March, and the Vietnam Moratorium protest COMBINED. The capacity of approximately 350,000 along the parade route was more than exceeded.
And let’s not forget, these people braved unusually cold weather, some waiting outside in public areas for hours before dawn. All to be a part of this historic and unprecedented day. Perhaps there was warmth in numbers. There certainly was warmth in spirit throughout the Nation’s Capitol!
And can this town have a good time or what! Ten inaugural balls, parties in private homes throughout the city, throughout the country, dancing and cheering in the street! And who will ever forget the sight of the presidential couple dancing at the NEIGHBORHOOD inaugural ball, which was broadcast into homes around the world, as Beyonce beamed at them while singing “AT LAST”!
There’s more good news. Forbes Magazine has named Washington DC as one of the top ten cities for job growth. We rank number 2 behind Madison WI, with a 4.2% unemployment rate. Now, that is a 1% rise from October 2007, but still, given the present national economy, that’s pretty good. Federal and local government are the major employers, but defense contracting, law, and education are also large job sectors. There are so many colleges and schools in DC that education is expected to add 30,000 new jobs in 2009.
