To people who don’t live in DC, the District is seen to be an incredibly expensive place. While Washington certainly isn’t an inexpensive place, there are affordable locations to eat, drink, play, and live throughout the city, it’s just a matter of knowing where to look.

Finding an affordable place to live clearly comes with more baggage than finding an affordable dining room or watering hole, as choosing a home sticks with you longer than what you eat for lunch or what you drink at happy hour.

One community that is located in NW DC but has a significantly lower price tag than communities like Dupont, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, or even the U Street Corridor, is Petworth.

Petworth is a neat area, but isn’t for everyone. Petworth is certainly not Pleasantville. It doesn’t feature many white picket fences, nor perfectly groomed lawns, nor Tobey Maguire with his whiny voice. Petworth, is however, an interesting, cultural community that is attracting buyers because of its opportunity for growth as well as its relatively inexpensive real estate.

While most of the residences in Petworth are brick townhomes from earlier in the 20th Century, DC condos are sprouting up around the area. Because Petworth is considered to be slightly more “raw” than other communities closer to downtown DC, like Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom, the real estate is significantly more affordable. Located on the green and yellow Metro lines, the Petworth area revolves around Georgia Avenue, a street that is viewed by some as one that is heavy with crime and violence.

Please don’t interpret this post as being anti-Petworth, nor as a call to turn and run away from it. Just take it as this:

It isn’t for everyone. If, however, you are interested in an affordable neighborhood, joining a community that will grow over the next several years, and you’re comfortable with living through the bumps along the way, you should really look at a Petworth condo.
