Reston, VA is home to Reston Town Center and have many fabulous restaurants and shops within their commercial buildings. When I think of Reston, VA, it
totally stands out from the trendy yet urban residential homes, restaurants, and entertainment in the Washington, DC area which plays a huge role
between Reston, VA and Washington, DC population.
According to the Reston Connection written by Alex McVeigh on January 25, 2011, the Reston population has gone down in the past five years. This has a profound effect on how the community operates in providing a fair amount of schools, roads, and other types of infrastructure for the area. The survey points out that in the year 2000, there were 56,407 people that reside in the Reston area and compare that with the years of 2005-2009, where the population stands at 53,759,showing a 3,000 decrease of people living in this area.
Why such the decrease? Well, the newspaper points out possible factors that could cause the decline of population in this area which includes:
* A decline in the 18 under population living in the Reston area
* Smaller household sizes
* Lower turnover rate(most residents are styaing in their home for five plus years)
Patty Nicoson, chair of the Reston Master Plan Special Study task force, said she believes the things like household size will remain smaller with the coming Metro development. “With transit oriented development, there will be a lot of higher density apartments close to the station, which will naturally be smaller households,” she said. “I don’t think Reston will have quite the appeal for people working in Washington, D.C. that, say, Arlington has, but with Metro coming, it’s always a possibility.” Agreed!
