The forecast is for a beautiful weather today for you to explore Irish culture and tradition. But as the Going out Gurus’ Fritz Hahn wrote, the majority of DC will “explore Irish culture and tradition” today in bars.

“Wednesday is St. Patrick’s Day,” Hahn wrote. ”And of course there are plenty of Irish cultural opportunities in the city. But let’s be honest — when it comes down to it, there’s one place that really dominates this particular holiday: the bar.”
Well said Fritz, well said.
Going Out Gurus has an extensive list of bars to attend today, including some of these:
Ireland’s Four Courts, 2051 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

Large Fire in Building on 19th Street in Dupont Circle

Just as I was getting off the Dupont Circle Metro to walk towards Foggy Bottom at around 3 pm, I saw hordes of people standing around staring to the sky. I soon joined them, and realized that they were looking at a stream of smoke above the building that houses Levante’s restaurant on 19th street. Fire trucks soon swarmed the scene.
“(The fire) started shortly after the lunch hour today, and is currently being fought by a number of DC’s Bravest. Engine 4 (Hornet’s Nest) Ladder 9 and Ladder 14, and an EMS and Fire command units and several ambulances,” We Love DC writer Tom Bridge writes. ”They’re moving trucks onto New Hampshire Avenue, as well, to fight the fire from all sides. According to EMS scanner reports, the fires are in the ductwork now, probably starting from Levante’s kitchen. They’re venting the roof with an axe and a chain saw right now.”
I saw more than five trucks surrounding the building. Here is a shot of the smoke above the building:

See all of my photos of the scene here.
“To add insult to injury,” Bridge wrote. ”Those cars stuck at meters on 19th and elsewhere, trapped by the fire trucks, are all being ticketed. Way to go, DC DPW.”
You can see Bridge’s entire story, with updates, and even video footage here.
Hopefully everything will turn out alright.

DC Rated Number Two City in US for Young Residents

Washington, DC has been rated the number two city in the country for young Americans to live in by Portfolio.com. The study was based on a variety of factors, including annual rate of employment growth from 2004–2009, per capita income in 2008, and median rent in 2008.
Austin, Texas was the only metropolis that beat out DC for the title of top city. According to the author of the article, G. Scott Thomas, Austin “has the strongest concentration of young people among the 67 metros. Twenty-eight percent of its residents are between the ages of 18 and 34. The median for the study group is 23.1 percent.”
DC, Raleigh, and Boston were the other top cities. Houston, Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Tulsa were listed as five through eight.
Here’s what Thomas had to say about DC:
“Educated young adults flock to the nation’s capital, where 35.8 percent of all 18-to-34-year-olds hold bachelor’s degrees. The study group’s median is 23.2 percent. Per capita income ($56,510) is well above average.”

DC Circulator Bus About to Be Back in Service!

After about six months of not running, the DC Circulator bus will return to service during the Cherry Blossom Festival, according to Kytja Weir of the Washington Examiner.
The bus had its service suspended in late 2009, as DC said it would save the city almost $140,000. The bus’ Smithsonian/National Mall route will return at 10 a.m. on March 27. The route will circle around the U.S. Capitol, the Mall and 17th Street.
“The Circulator is the one of the only and cheapest modes of public transportation to get directly to the Tidal Basin and around the Mall,” Weir wrote. ”Tourmobile, which has an exclusive contract with the National Park Service, costs at least $26 for an adult, compared with $1 for the Circulator. Metrobus also offers some service near the area, but the Circulator’s five routes are easier for visitors to navigate, with its $1 fares and bright red buses that run on a 10-minute schedule.”
Good to have the Circulator back, as the city is much more complete with the presence of the big buses with the maps on the side.

You can read Weir’s entire article here.
When you hop off the Circulator take a stroll around downtown DC and check out some of our fantastic DC Condominiums.

Will Chinatown Become the Center of DC like Times Square in NYC?

Chinatown is a fun place to be in DC. While DC is a major metropolis, it is also a relatively small city, a place that lacks certain qualities of a big city. Don’t get me wrong, Downtown DC is certainly a happening place, a region where the hustle bustle of the nation’s capital is palpable.
But it’s not, in any way, “bright lights, big city”. The District’s restrictions on building height, as well as the fact that the region just isn’t that big, makes DC feel tiny in relation to mega-cities like New York.

Which brings us to a terrific article written by “Dan M.” on the Greater Greater Washington website. In light of a proposal to add more billboards to Chinatown, Dan examines the potential of the area becoming DC’s version of Times Square in New York City.
“Gallery Place/Chinatown is smaller and quieter than Times Square. DC is a smaller city,” Dan writes. “The entertainment also centers around sports rather theater. But on the whole, the two districts are of a kind. They are both the heart of commercialized tourism in their respective cities. They are where suburbanites go to experience life ‘downtown’.”
Dan goes on to write that adding Times Square qualities to Chinatown would bring a unique aspect to DC.
“When I hear there is a proposal to add even more video billboards to Gallery Place, I think that’s awesome” He wrote. ”The more the merrier. The main reason I ever go to Chinatown in the first place is that it isn’t Georgetown or Capitol Hill. I want Chinatown to be as colorful and bright and fun as possible.”
You can read Dan’s entire opinion piece here.
I think it would be phenomenal for Chinatown to become just a little more “happenin’”. Without getting out of control, I think creating more of a “big city feel” in the area could really bring something new to the DC.
Chinatown is already one of the most popular DC condo neighborhoods, and if more excitement comes to the community, the interest in Chinatown condos will probably soar even higher.
Check all of our Chinatown condominiums and tour one today!
