Washington, DC has been rated the number two city in the country for young Americans to live in by Portfolio.com.  The study was based on a variety of factors, including annual rate of employment growth from 2004–2009, per capita income in 2008, and median rent in 2008.

Austin, Texas was the only metropolis that beat out DC for the title of top city.  According to the author of the article, G. Scott Thomas, Austin “has the strongest concentration of young people among the 67 metros. Twenty-eight percent of its residents are between the ages of 18 and 34. The median for the study group is 23.1 percent.”

DC, Raleigh, and Boston were the other top cities.  Houston, Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Tulsa were listed as five through eight.

Here’s what Thomas had to say about DC:

“Educated young adults flock to the nation’s capital, where 35.8 percent of all 18-to-34-year-olds hold bachelor’s degrees. The study group’s median is 23.2 percent. Per capita income ($56,510) is well above average.”
