Reports show that Maine had the highest home vacancy rate of 22.8%, Vermont (20.5%), Florida (17.5%), Arizona (16.3%), and Alaska (15.9%). The census appears to lump homes, but ski lodges, beach homes, or second homes as part of the vacancy rate. However, Paul Bishop of National Realtors points out that “these properties aren’t vacant in the usual sense of the term. A vacation home is hardly the same situation as a foreclosed home that has been taken back by the bank”

The article points out that there are some states that have the lowest vacancy rates which include California, Iowa, Illinois, Washington, and our area Virginia all having a home vacancy rate of 9.2% or lower.

Reading this article made me think:

* Is it really fair to include ski lodges or beach homes as part of the vacancy rate?
* Should second homes or vacation homes have it own category of vacancy rate?
* Do you think a 13% vacancy rate of homes throughout the United States is way too high?
* What is your take on this?
